Medicinal plants and heavy metals: a library review

Resumo: | The use of medicinal plants is a very old practice. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 80% of the population uses plants for therapeutic purposes. Medicinal plants are plant species with several active principles, which can act in the human and animal body to fight many diseases. Despite its beneficial health effects, many studies report contamination by heavy metals, both from natural and anthropogenic sources. In many countries, medicinal plants are used and marketed with little or no supervision for the presence of heavy metals. The objective of this article was to qualitatively analyze publications, carried out in the last 10 years, on contamination by heavy metals in medicinal plants, in order to understand the mechanisms of tolerance of plants to the presence of heavy metals, to know the legislation that guides the use of medicinal plants and understand what still needs to be done to avoid contamination by heavy metals through medicinal plants. For the elaboration of this review, a search was carried out in the Scopus database, using the terms “heavy metal” and “medicinal plants”. After the search, the works were analyzed using the VOsviewer® software. It is concluded that the interest in plants in the last 10 years is constant. Plants have different ways to tolerate the presence of heavy metals. New regulations need to be implemented, the inspection of herbal products needs to be more rigorous and the population needs to be better informed about the therapeutic properties based on scientific work and about the possible contamination present in plants. |

Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud, aproximadamente el 80% de la población usa las plantas con fines terapéuticos. Las plantas medicinales son especies vegetales con varios principios activos, que pueden actuar en el organismo humano y animal para combatir numerosas enfermedades. A pesar de sus efectos beneficiosos para la salud, muchos estudios reportan contaminación por metales pesados, tanto de fuentes naturales como antropogénicas. El objetivo de este artículo fue analizar cualitativamente publicaciones, realizadas en los últimos 10 años, sobre contaminación por metales pesados en plantas medicinales, con el fin de comprender los mecanismos de tolerancia de las plantas a la presencia de metales pesados, conocer la legislación que orienta el uso de las plantas medicinales, y comprender lo que queda por hacer para evitar la contaminación por metales pesados a través de las plantas medicinales. Para la elaboración de esta revisión se realizó una búsqueda en la base de datos Scopus, utilizando los términos “metal pesado” y “plantas medicinales”. Después de la búsqueda, los trabajos fueron analizados mediante el software VOsviewer®. Se concluye que el interés por las plantas en los últimos 10 años es constante. Las plantas tienen diferentes formas de tolerar la presencia de metales pesados. Es necesario implementar nuevas regulaciones, la inspección de los productos a base de hierbas debe ser más rigurosa y la población debe estar mejor informada sobre las propiedades terapéuticas basadas en trabajos científicos y sobre la posible contaminación presente en las plantas.A utilização de plantas medicinais é uma prática muito antiga. De acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde, aproximadamente 80% da população utiliza plantas para fins terapêuticos. Plantas medicinais são espécies vegetais com vários princípios ativos, que podem agir no organismo humano e de animais para combater muitas doenças. Apesar de seus efeitos benéficos para a saúde, muitos estudos relatam a contaminação por metais pesados, por fontes naturais e antropogênicas. O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar qualitativamente publicações, realizadas nos últimos 10 anos, sobre contaminação por metais pesados em plantas medicinais, a fim de compreender os mecanismos de tolerância das plantas a presença de metais pesados, conhecer a legislação que norteia o uso de plantas medicinais, e compreender o que ainda precisa ser feito para evitar a contaminação por metais pesados por meio das plantas medicinais. Para a elaboração desta revisão foi realizada uma busca na base Scopus, utilizando os termos “heavy metal” and “medicinal plants”. Após a busca, os trabalhos foram analisados com auxílio do software VOsviewer®. Conclui-se que o interesse pelas plantas nos últimos 10 anos é constante. As plantas possuem diferentes formas para tolerar a presença de metais pesados.
