Resumo: | Generalized anxiety disorder affects a significant portion of the world population, for its treatment benzodiazepine drugs are used, which have a high rate of side effects and chemical dependence. Thus, the population seeks alternative treatments to treat the disease, such as through traditional herbal products, including Matricaria recutita L. (chamomile), which has a low probability of adverse reaction. The objective of this work was to carry out a literature review of articles published from the years 2000 to 2022, which report the use of chamomile in the treatment of anxiety. For this, 4 databases were selected, having as markers the keywords: “chamomile”, “chamomile & anxiolytic”, “chamomile & anxiety”, “chamomile & sedative”; and only the works that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Altogether, 16 scientific studies were used for the construction of this review, including clinical and pre-clinical trials, as well as review articles already published. The analysis parameters, such as pharmacological properties of the plant, treatment purposes and evidence of action through in vivo, in vitro and in silico studies, could be observed through the complete reading of the selected articles, highlighting the anxiolytic effect of chamomile granted by secondary metabolites of the flavonoid class. It was also evidenced the scarcity of research on the therapeutic effects of the herb, where this fact is linked to the devaluation of popular medicine. |
