The journal O Estandarte like a vehicle of presbyterian education between the years of 1893 and 1903

Resumo: | The aim of this study is to understand the journal “O Estandarte” like an education vehicle from Presbyterian Church from 1893 and 1903. It is important to note that 1893 was the foundation year of the journal and thar 1903, due to diverse divergences, there was a schism in Brazilian Presbyterianism, so that “O Estandarte” started to be directed by the new religious denomination that was born during this division: the Independent Presbyterian Church. The methodology used on this research has qualitative type, in which we select the educational proposals prevalent on this journal. Furthermore, a specialized bibliography helped us to analyze our sources, as well as understanding the national evangelical mentality between the end of nineteenth century and the beginning of twentieth century. We found discussions related to institutions, morality, theology, and politics. In all these cases, the major writers exhorted their readers to adopt the suitable attitudes on their articles. We understand that, in a direct or indirect way, that publications held important educational proposals. We have concluded that this journal became an educator for those who had access to it, during a period of political and social changes in Brazil, when the Presbyterians looked for raise followers among the different sectors of society aiming, this way, entrench their expansion project in the country. We believe that this issue could contribute with the discussions related to Protestant education within the Cultural History perspective. |

Es importante observar que 1893 ha sido el año de fundación del periódico y que 1903, gracias a las más diversas diferencias, ha habido un cisma en el presbiterianismo brasileño y la dirección del “O Estandarte” fue asumida por la nueva denominación religiosa que nacía con aquella división: la Iglesia Presbiteriana Independiente. La metodología utilizada en la investigación tiene carácter cualitativo, en la cual seleccionamos las propuestas educacionales presentes en el periódico. Además, leyendo la bibliografía especializada tuvimos ayuda en el análisis de las fuentes, así como en la comprehensión de la mentalidad evangélica nacional entre el fin del siglo XIX y el inicio del siglo XX. Encontramos discusiones acerca de las instituciones, de la moralidad, de la teología y de la política. En todos los casos, los escritores exhortaban los lectores a adoptaren las posturas indicadas en los artículos que eran publicados. Comprendemos que en aquellas publicaciones estaban las propuestas educacionales de forma directa o indirecta. Encontramos que el periódico ha servido cómo un maestro para quienes tenían acceso a sus artículos, en un período de cambios políticos y sociales en Brasil, en el cual los presbiterianos querían recaudar seguidores entre los diversos sectores de la sociedad objetivando, así, afianzar su proyecto de expansión en el país. Creemos que la temática planteada puede ayudar con las discusiones acerca la educación protestante dentro de la perspectiva de la Historia Cultural.O objetivo do presente trabalho é o estudo d’O Estandarte enquanto veículo de educação da Igreja Presbiteriana entre 1893 e 1903. É importante observar que 1893 foi o ano de fundação do periódico e que 1903, por divergências das mais variadas possíveis, houve um cisma no presbiterianismo brasileiro e O Estandarte passou a ser dirigido pela nova denominação que nascia com aquela divisão: Igreja Presbiteriana Independente. A metodologia utilizada na pesquisa tem caráter qualitativo, na qual selecionamos as propostas educacionais presentes no periódico em questão. Além disso, leituras de uma bibliografia especializada nos ajudam nas análises das fontes, bem como no entendimento da mentalidade evangélica nacional entre o final do século XIX e o início do século XX. Temos encontrado discussões relativas a instituições, a moralidade, a teologia e a política. Em todos os casos, os redatores exortavam os leitores a adotarem as posturas indicadas nos artigos que eram publicados. Entendemos que naquelas publicações estavam presentes propostas educacionais de forma direta ou indireta. Concluímos que o referido periódico serviu como um educador para os que a ele tinha acesso, em um período de transformações políticas e sociais no Brasil, no qual os presbiterianos buscavam angariar adeptos entre os diversos setores da sociedade objetivando, dessa forma, consolidar seu projeto de expansão no país.
