Prevalence of depression and anxiety among institutionalized elderly in Campina Grande, Paraíba

Resumo: Objective: To estimate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among a population of institutionalized elderly and to verify possible associated factors. Method: The evaluation of the elderly took place in three phases: screening of cognitive ability through the application of the Mini-Mental State Examination - MMSE; collection of socioeconomic data through the application of a questionnaire; determination of the prevalence of Depression and Anxiety through the application of the Geriatric Depression Scale - GDE and the Beck Anxiety Inventory - BAI. The data were tabulated in absolute and relative frequency tables, considering the mean and standard deviation values, and the chi-square test (χ2) was applied with a significance level of 5%. Results: There was a significant correlation between the presence of chronic diseases and the prevalence of Depression (P-value: 0.024) in the sample, underlining the influence exerted by intra-institutional living conditions on the mental health of institutionalized elderly. A relatively high prevalence of anxiety was found, as well as moderate levels of depression in the sample. Conclusion: The profound impact exerted by the different material and symbolic conditions of intra-institutional existence on the individual subjectivity of each elderly person residing in Homes for the Aged is evidenced.

Método: La evaluación de los ancianos se realizó en tres fases: tamizaje de la capacidad cognitiva a través de la aplicación del Mini-Examen del Estado Mental - MEEM; recolección de datos socioeconómicos a través de la aplicación de un cuestionario; determinación de la prevalencia de Depresión y Ansiedad mediante la aplicación de la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica - EDG y el Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck - IAB. Los datos fueron tabulados en tablas de frecuencias absolutas y relativas, considerando los valores de media y desviación estándar, y se aplicó la prueba de chi-cuadrado (χ2) con un nivel de significación del 5%. Resultados: Hubo correlación significativa entre la presencia de enfermedades crónicas y la prevalencia de Depresión (P-valor: 0,024) en la muestra, subrayando la influencia ejercida por las condiciones de vida intrainstitucional en la salud mental de los ancianos institucionalizados. Se encontró una prevalencia relativamente alta de ansiedad, así como niveles moderados de depresión en la muestra. Conclusión: Se evidencia el profundo impacto que ejercen las diferentes condiciones materiales y simbólicas de existencia intrainstitucional sobre la subjetividad individual de cada adulto mayor residente en Asilos de Ancianos.Objetivo: Estimar a prevalência de depressão e ansiedade entre uma população de idosos institucionalizados e verificar possíveis fatores associados. Método: A avaliação dos idosos ocorreu em três fases: triagem da capacidade cognitiva através da aplicação do Mini-Exame do Estado Mental - MEEM; coleta de dados socioeconômicos através da aplicação de questionário; apuração da prevalência de Depressão e Ansiedade através da aplicação da Escala de Depressão Geriátrica – EDG e do Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck - IAB. Os dados foram tabulados em tabelas de frequência absoluta e relativa, considerando-se os valores de média e desvio padrão, sendo aplicado o teste de Qui-quadrado (χ2) com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Observou-se uma significativa correlação entre a presença de doenças crônicas e a prevalência de Depressão (P-valor: 0.024) na amostra, sublinhando a influência exercida pelas condições de vida intra-institucionais sobre a saúde mental dos idosos institucionalizados. Constatou-se uma prevalência relativamente elevada de ansiedade, bem como níveis moderados de depressão junto à amostra.
