Epidemiological profile of meningitis in Brazil, based on data from DataSUS in the years 2020 and 2021

Resumo: Introduction: considered a disease of great relevance to Public Health, meningitis whose pathophysiological foundation is severe inflammation of the meninges. Materials and methods: descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective research carried out through SINAN in 2020 and 2021. Results: in quantitative cases, in 2021, Aseptic Meningitis (VM) presented with 42% (n= 1,938), followed by Unspecified meningitis (MNE), with 20% (n= 938) and meningitis caused by other bacteria (MB) with 17% (n= 786). And, respectively, MV=374, MNE=174 and MB=137 cases in 2021; in 2020, males had 58% (n= 2,690) of cases, females accounting for 41% (n= 1,900), respectively, 55% (n= 459), and 44% (n= 372) of meningitis cases in 2021; there were 9.71% (n= 442) of deaths, and 68.64% (n= 3,123) of discharges, in 2020. In 2021, respectively, there were 11.07% (n= 92), and 60.53 % (n=503); patients with schooling from “1st to 4th grade of EF incomplete”, “5th to 8th grade of EF incomplete” and “MS complete”, respectively, presented 4.16% (n=191), 5.59% (n=257) and 7.80% (n= 358) in 2020, in 2021, respectively, 4.45% (n= 37), 5.53% (n= 46) and 6.9% (n= 58) cases of meningitis; the age group from 20 to 39 years old, had 22.3% (n=1,026), children under 1 year old, with 22.2% (n=1,021), and from 40-59 years old, registered 17, 8% (n=819) of meningitis cases in 2020; urban area scored 87% (n= 4,012) of positive diagnoses, in rural areas, with 4.8% (n= 221), in 2020, in 2021 this information was underreported. Conclusion: It is worth mentioning the importance of the performance of multidisciplinary health teams in the treatment of meningitis cases.

Resultados: en casos cuantitativos, en 2021, la Meningitis Aséptica (VM) presentó un 42% (n= 1938), seguida de la Meningitis No Especificada ( MNE), con 20% (n=938) y meningitis por otras bacterias (MB) con 17% (n=786). Y, respectivamente, MV=374, MNE=174 y MB=137 casos en 2021; en 2020, los hombres tenían el 58 % (n= 2690) de los casos, las mujeres representaban el 41 % (n= 1900), respectivamente, el 55 % (n= 459) y el 44 % (n= 372) de los casos de meningitis en 2021; hubo 9,71% (n= 442) de defunciones y 68,64% (n= 3.123) de altas, en 2020. En 2021, respectivamente, hubo 11,07% (n= 92) y 60,53 % (n=503); los pacientes con escolaridad de “1° a 4° grado de FE incompleta”, “5° a 8° grado de FE incompleta” y “MS completa”, respectivamente, presentaron 4,16% (n=191), 5,59% (n=257) y 7,80% (n=358) en 2020, en 2021, respectivamente, 4,45% (n=37), 5,53% (n=46) y 6,9% (n=58) casos de meningitis; el grupo de edad de 20 a 39 años, con 22,3% (n=1.026), los menores de 1 año, con 22,2% (n=1.021), y de 40 a 59 años, registró 17,8% (n= 819) de casos de meningitis en 2020; zona urbana anotó 87% (n= 4.012) de diagnósticos positivos, en zona rural 4,8% (n= 221), en 2020, en 2021 se subreportó este dato. Conclusión: Cabe mencionar la importancia de la actuación de equipos multidisciplinarios de salud en el tratamiento de los casos de meningitis.Introdução: considerada uma doença de grande relevância à Saúde Pública, a meningite cujo alicerce fisiopatológico é a inflamação grave das meninges. Materiais e métodos: pesquisa descritiva, transversal, retrospectiva realizada por meio do SINAN em 2020 e 2021. Resultados: em quantitativos de casos, em 2021, a Meningite Asséptica (MV) apresentou-se com 42% (n= 1.938), seguido da Meningite não especificada (MNE), com 20% (n= 938) e a meningite por outras bactérias (MB) com 17% (n= 786). E, respectivamente, MV= 374, MNE= 174 e MB= 137 casos em 2021; em 2020 o sexo masculino apresentou 58% (n= 2.690) de casos, o feminino percentuando 41% (n= 1.900), respectivamente, 55% (n= 459), e 44% (n= 372) de casos de meningite em 2021; foram registrados 9,71% (n= 442) de mortes, e 68,64% (n= 3.123) de altas, em 2020. Em 2021, respectivamente, tiveram 11,07% (n= 92), e 60,53% (n= 503); pacientes com escolaridade do “1ª a 4ª incompleta do EF”, “5ª a 8ª incompleta do EF” e “EM completo”, respectivamente, apresentaram, 4,16% (n= 191), 5,59% (n= 257) e 7,80% (n= 358) em 2020, já em 2021, respectivamente, 4,45% (n= 37), 5,53% (n= 46) e 6,9% (n= 58) casos de meningite; a faixa etária de 20 a 39 anos, apresentaram 22,3% (n= 1.026), crianças com menos de 1 ano de idade, com 22,2 % (n= 1.021), e de  40-59 anos, registraram 17,8% (n=819) de casos de meningite em 2020; zona urbana marcou 87% (n= 4.012) de diagnósticos positivos, na zona rural, com 4,8% (n= 221), em 2020, em 2021 essa informação foi subnotificada.
