Digital dental radiology and its benefits for the undergraduate Dentistry course

Resumo: Digital radiology has several advantages over conventional radiology, from image acquisition to image storage, and has been widely used. Thus, the present work configures a retrospective and quantitative study with the objective of counting the number of radiographic exams performed and presenting the benefits of this technology for the undergraduate course. The number of digital radiographs performed in the period of one year in the dentistry course at Centro Universitário Newton Paiva located in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG was considered in the study. For this, the database of the institution's digital radiology laboratory was used, which is composed of intraoral and extraoral digital radiographic exams. This laboratory runs an extension project for undergraduate students in dentistry, in which the members help in carrying out the exams. In the period of 1 year, 8,928 digital radiological images were performed. It can be concluded, then, that the teaching of digital radiology in university centers is of great importance for students, since digital radiology has great benefits for the patient and for the professional or student who performs it, in addition to presenting a considerable demand.

Así, el presente trabajo configura un estudio retrospectivo y cuantitativo con el objetivo de contabilizar el número de exámenes radiográficos realizados y presentar los beneficios de esta tecnología para el curso de pregrado. Se consideró en el estudio el número de radiografías digitales realizadas en el período de un año en el curso de odontología del Centro Universitário Newton Paiva ubicado en la ciudad de Belo Horizonte, MG. Para ello se utilizó la base de datos del laboratorio de radiología digital de la institución, la cual está compuesta por exámenes radiográficos digitales intraorales y extraorales. Este laboratorio ejecuta un proyecto de extensión para estudiantes de pregrado en odontología, en el que los miembros ayudan en la realización de los exámenes. En el periodo de un año se realizaron 8.928 imágenes radiológicas digitales. Se puede concluir, entonces, que la enseñanza de la radiología digital en los centros universitarios es de gran importancia para los estudiantes, ya que la radiología digital tiene grandes beneficios para el paciente y para el profesional o estudiante que la realiza, además de presentar una demanda considerable.A radiologia digital apresenta diversas vantagens em relação a radiologia convencional, desde a obtenção até o armazenamento da imagem, e vem sendo amplamente utilizada. Assim, o presente trabalho configura um estudo retrospectivo e quantitativo com o objetivo de contabilizar o número de exames radiográficos realizados e apresentar os benefícios dessa tecnologia para o curso de graduação. Foi considerado no estudo o número de radiografias digitais realizadas no período de um ano no curso de odontologia do Centro Universitário Newton Paiva localizado na cidade de Belo Horizonte, MG. Para isso, utilizou-se o banco de dados do laboratório de radiologia digital da instituição, que é composto por exames radiográficos digitais intrabucais e extrabucais. Neste laboratório funciona um projeto de extensão para alunos da graduação em odontologia, no qual os integrantes auxiliam na realização dos exames. No período de um ano, 8.928 imagens radiológicas digitais foram realizadas.
