Impact of inflammatory diets on endocrine disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus

Resumo: | Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic non-communicable disease in which there are endocrine and metabolic disorders, such as oxidative stress and inflammatory processes due to hyperglycemia. These inflammatory processes have a multifactorial origin, including inadequate nutrition. In this sense, the objective of this review was to discuss the endocrine disorders of diabetes mellitus and its relationship with the dietary inflammatory index. Methodology: A narrative review was carried out based on the search for articles published in the Pubmed, Science Direct, SciELO and Cochrane Library databases, using the keywords “Diabetes Mellitus”, “Inflammation”, “Insulin Resistence”, “Oxidative Stress” and “Inflammatory Diet”. Result: Scientific studies suggest that some components of the diet cause oxidative stress and inflammation, which in turn affects the clinical picture of individuals with diabetes. It is possible to detect that diets based on the western lifestyle, with a diet rich in red meat, refined sugars, industrialized drinks and processed foods, are considered positive stimulators of the increase in the levels of inflammatory biomarkers, such as CRP, TNF-α and interleukins. Conclusion: there is a possible relationship between the presence of diabetes mellitus and a pro-inflammatory diet, requiring further studies on the topic addressed. |

Estos procesos inflamatorios tienen un origen multifactorial, incluida una nutrición inadecuada. En este sentido, el objetivo de esta revisión fue discutir los trastornos endocrinos de la diabetes mellitus y su relación con el índice inflamatorio de la dieta. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión narrativa basada en la búsqueda de artículos publicados en las bases de datos Pubmed, Science, Direct SciELO y Cochrane Library, utilizando las palabras clave “Diabetes Mellitus”, “Inflamación”, “Resistencia a la insulina”, “Estrés oxidativo” y “Dieta inflamatória”. Resultado: los estudios científicos sugieren que algunos componentes de la dieta causan estrés oxidativo e inflamación, lo que a su vez afecta el cuadro clínico de las personas con diabetes. Es posible detectar que las dietas basadas en el estilo de vida occidental, con una dieta rica en carnes rojas, azúcares refinados, bebidas industrializadas y alimentos procesados, se consideran estimuladores positivos del aumento en los niveles de biomarcadores inflamatorios, como CRP, TNF-α y interleucinas Conclusión: existe una posible relación entre la presencia de diabetes mellitus y una dieta proinflamatoria, que requiere más estudios sobre el tema abordado.Introdução: O diabetes mellitus é uma doença crônica não transmissível em que há desordens endócrinas e metabólicas, como estresse oxidativo e processos inflamatórios em decorrência da hiperglicemia. Esses processos inflamatórios têm origem multifatorial, dentre eles, a alimentação inadequada. Neste sentido, o objetivo dessa revisão foi discutir as desordens endócrinas do diabetes mellitus e sua relação com o índice inflamatório da dieta. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma revisão narrativa a partir da busca de artigos publicados nas bases de dados Pubmed, Science Direct, SciELO e Cochrane Library, utilizando os descritores “Diabetes Mellitus”, “Inflammation”, “Insulin Resistence”, “Oxidative Stress” e “Inflammatory Diet”. Resultado: Estudos científicos sugerem que alguns componentes da dieta causem estresse oxidativo e inflamação, o que por sua vez repercute no quadro clínico de indivíduos com diabetes. É possível detectar que dietas baseadas no estilo de vida ocidental, com uma alimentação rica em carne vermelha, açúcares refinados, bebidas industrializadas e alimentos processados, são considerados estimuladores positivos da elevação dos níveis de biomarcadores inflamatórios, a exemplo da PCR, TNF-α e interleucinas. Conclusão: existe uma possível relação entre a presença do diabetes mellitus e uma alimentação pró-inflamatória, sendo necessário mais estudos acerca do tema abordado.
