Portuguese Enlightenment and Public Instruction: the contributions of Antonio Ribeiro Sanches to educational assumptions in the second half of the eighteenth century

Resumo: | The second half of the eighteenth century in Portugal was a time of several changes for the kingdom and its colonies. The formulation of works debating education in the kingdom, the contributions of the Enlightenment and the rise of the Marquis of Pombal, mark some of the transformations that changed the administration of the kingdom and, consequently, the pedagogical scenario of the metropolis and its possessions. With the collaboration of Antônio Ribeiro Sanches, considered one of the Portuguese Enlightenment, and his work "Letters on Education of the Mocidade", the educational scene in the Portuguese metropolis undergoes changes that promote a new conception of public instruction and civility. The purpose of this article is to discuss the civilizing process, specifically analyzing the contributions of the Portuguese Enlightenment to the Pombaline Reforms of Education and investigating the changes in the educational system in the Northern Capitanias. Theoretically we will be guided by the German sociologist Norbert Elias, thinking education as a condition in which men have become civilized in a historical teaching-learning process that has also become essential to the so-called development of manners and behaviors responsible for the formation of a model of civilization, both in the Metropolis and in the colonies of America. As a methodological proposal, we approach the perspective of the Social History of Knowledge of the English historian Peter Burke, for analyzing the work of the Portuguese philosopher will analyze the practice, reception and behavior of the educational presuppositions of the Portuguese Enlightenment. From the analysis of Antônio Ribeiro Sanches we verified a modernizing and civilizing process in education. |

La formulación de obras debatiendo la educación en el reino, las contribuciones del iluminismo y la ascensión del Marqués de Pombal, marcan algunas de las transformaciones que cambiaron la administración del reino, y consecuentemente, el escenario pedagógico de la metrópoli y sus posesiones. Con la colaboración de Antonio Ribeiro Sanches, uno de la Ilustración portugués, y sus "Cartas sobre la educación de los jóvenes", el escenario educativo en la metrópoli portuguesa sufre cambios que promuevan una nueva concepción de la educación pública y la civilidad. Por lo tanto, este artículo tiene como objetivo debatir sobre el proceso de civilización, más específicamente, el análisis de las contribuciones de la Ilustración portuguesas a la reforma Pombal de Educación y la determinación de los cambios en el sistema educativo. Teóricamente estaremos orientados por el sociólogo alemán Norbert Elias, al pensar la educación como un condicionante en que los hombres se volvieron civilizados en un proceso histórico de enseñanza-aprendizaje que se tornó también esencial al llamado desarrollo de los modos y conductas responsables de la formación de un modelo de civilización, tanto en la metrópoli y en las colonias de América. Como un enfoque metodológico, nos acercamos a la perspectiva del historiador Inglés Conocimiento de Historia Social Peter Burke, porque cuando se analiza la obra del filósofo portugués será analizar la práctica, la recepción y el comportamiento de los supuestos educativos de la Ilustración portugués. A partir del análisis de Antônio Ribeiro Sanches verificamos un proceso modernizador y civilizador en la educación.A segunda metade do século XVIII em Portugal foi um momento de várias mudanças para o reino e suas colônias. A formulação de obras debatendo a educação no reino, as contribuições do iluminismo e a ascensão do Marquês de Pombal, marcam algumas das transformações que mudaram a administração do reino, e consequentemente, o cenário pedagógico da metrópole e suas posses. Com a colaboração de Antônio Ribeiro Sanches, considerado um dos iluministas portugueses, e sua obra “Cartas sobre a Educação da Mocidade”, o cenário educacional na Metrópole portuguesa sofre mudanças que promovem uma nova concepção de instrução pública e de civilidade. Destarte, o presente artigo tem como objetivo o debate do processo civilizador, mais especificamente, analisando os aportes do Iluminismo português para as Reformas Pombalinas da Educação e averiguando as mudanças no sistema educacional. Teoricamente estaremos orientados pelo sociólogo alemão Norbert Elias, ao pensar a educação como um condicionante em que os homens se tornaram civilizados em um processo histórico de ensino-aprendizagem que se tornou, também, essencial ao chamado desenvolvimento dos modos e condutas responsável pela formação de um modelo de civilização, tanto na Metrópole como nas colônias da América. Como proposta metodológica, nos aproximamos da perspectiva da História Social do Conhecimento do historiador inglês Peter Burke, pois ao analisar da obra do filósofo português analisar-se-á a prática, a recepção e o comportamento dos pressupostos educacionais do Iluminismo Português.
