Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: a systematic review

Resumo: Introduction: Osteoporosis is an osteometabolic disease considered silent and mainly affects the female population during the postmenopausal period of the woman. Therefore, disease prevention is the most efficient method to prevent the occurrence that fractures and becomes fundamental for postmenopausal women. Methodology: An exploratory descriptive study. The systematic bibliographic analysis was performed according to the PRISMA protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes). The databases used were SciELO and PubMed. Results: Data analysis found 4,967 articles. After careful reading, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 5 articles were selected for the design of the present study. Discussion: There are prevention methods that consist mainly of healthy lifestyle habits in women, even though the postmenopausal organism is more susceptible to the development of osteoporosis. The practice of physical activities and adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D proved to be the most effective preventive methods. Conclusion: The lifestyle habits of postmenopausal women can act directly as favorable or preventive factors in relation to the development of osteoporosis.

Metodología: Estudio exploratorio descriptivo. El análisis bibliográfico sistemático se realizó de acuerdo con el protocolo PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis). Las bases de datos utilizadas fueron SciELO y PubMed. Resultados: El análisis de datos encontró 4.967 artículos. Luego de una lectura atenta, considerando los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se seleccionaron 5 artículos para el diseño de este estudio. Discusión: Existen métodos de prevención que consisten principalmente en hábitos de vida saludables en la mujer, aunque el cuerpo posmenopáusico es más susceptible al desarrollo de osteoporosis. La práctica de actividades físicas y la ingesta adecuada de calcio y vitamina D resultaron ser los métodos preventivos más eficaces. Conclusión: Los hábitos de vida de las mujeres posmenopáusicas pueden actuar directamente como factores favorables o preventivos en relación con el desarrollo de la osteoporosis.Introdução: A osteoporose é uma doença osteometabólica considerada silenciosa e que afeta principalmente a população feminina durante o período pós-menopáusico da mulher. Portanto, a prevenção da doença é o método mais eficiente para evitar a ocorrência que fraturas e torna-se fundamental para mulheres pós-menopáusicas. Objetivo: Revisar os aspectos preventivos que envolvem a osteoporose em mulheres em período pós-menopausa. Metodologia: Estudo de caráter descritivo exploratório. A análise bibliográfica sistemática foi realizada de acordo com o protocolo da PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Itens for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). As bases de dados utilizadas foram SciELO e PubMed. Resultados: A análise de dados localizou 4.967 artigos. Após a leitura criteriosa, considerando os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 5 artigos para o delineamento do presente estudo. Discussão: Existem métodos de prevenção que consistem principalmente nos hábitos de vida saudável na mulher, ainda que o organismo pós-menopáusico seja mais suscetível ao desenvolvimento da osteoporose. A prática de atividades físicas e a ingesta adequada de cálcio e vitamina D se mostraram os métodos preventivos de maior eficácia.
