Antônio de Sousa and the potiguar education in the First Republic (1889-1930)

Resumo: This article is inserted in the field of History of Education, under a cultural approach, articulating the domain of the History of Intellectuals. We aim to investigate the acting of the intellectual Antônio de Sousa in the educational context of the Rio Grande do Norte during the period of the First Republic (1889-1930). For this purpose, we use the subject's biographies as sources, made operational by the historiographic method of heuristics and hermeneutics. Minutes from cultural institutions, government messages, magazines and periodicals were also taken as sources. Antônio de Sousa is seen in this work as an intellectual according to the discussions proposed by Sirinelli (1998), understanding him as a member of a creative elite and cultural mediator. The construction of this article also starts from the tripod place of speech, practice and writing, proposed by Michel de Certeau (1982), so that, initially, we present the figure of Antônio de Sousa, then his acting in favor of potiguar education and, finally, we analyzed his writing in newspapers at the time with regard to educational themes, especially female education. Thus, we bring to light a subject in his space-time and networks of sociability, consolidating himself as an intellectual in favor of education, in the still recent republican regime.

Nuestro objetivo es investigar el trabajo del intelectual Antônio de Sousa en el contexto educativo del Rio Grande do Norte durante el período de la Primera República (1889-1930). Para este propósito, utilizamos las biografías del sujeto como fuentes, trabajadas por el método historiográfico de heurística y hermenéutica. Actas de instituciones culturales, mensajes gubernamentales, revistas y publicaciones periódicas también se tomaron como fuentes. Antônio de Sousa es visto en este trabajo como un intelectual de acuerdo con las discusiones propuestas por Sirinelli (1998), entendiéndolo como miembro de una élite creativa y mediador cultural. La construcción de este artículo también parte del trípode lugar del discurso, práctica y escritura, propuesto por Michel de Certeau (1982), de modo que, inicialmente, presentamos la figura de Antônio de Sousa, luego su actuación a favor de la educación potiguar y, finalmente, analizamos su escritura en periódicos del periodo con respecto a temas educativos, especialmente la educación femenina. Así, sacamos a la luz un tema en su espacio-tiempo y redes de sociabilidad, consolidándose como un intelectual a favor de la educación, en el todavía reciente régimen republicano.Este artigo se insere no campo da História da Educação, sob uma abordagem cultural, articulando o domínio da História dos Intelectuais. Temos como objetivo investigar a atuação do intelectual Antônio de Sousa no âmbito educacional norte-rio-grandense durante o período da Primeira República (1889-1930). Para tanto, utilizamos como fontes biografias do sujeito, operacionalizadas pelo método historiográfico da heurística e da hermenêutica. Também foram tomadas como fontes atas de instituições culturais, mensagens de governo, revistas e periódicos. Antônio de Sousa é visto neste trabalho como um intelectual de acordo com as discussões propostas por Sirinelli (1998), compreendendo-o como membro de uma elite criadora e mediadora cultural. A construção deste artigo parte também do tripé lugar de fala, prática e escrita, proposto por Michel de Certeau (1982), de modo que, inicialmente apresentamos a figura de Antônio de Sousa, em seguida a sua atuação em prol da educação potiguar e, por fim, analisamos a sua escrita nos jornais da época com relação a temáticas educacionais, sobretudo a educação feminina.
