A sociabilidade britânica no Rio de Janeiro do século XIX: os clubes de Cricket

As it occurred in many countries, in Brazil the first sports initiatives were organized by British, who in Rio de Janeiro began to settle in greater numbers from the arrival of the Portuguese royal family (1808). Although, in principle, they remain as a separate group in the fluminense society, over time it is possible to perceive changes in this posture. There have been several interface spaces, occasions that their practices could be known by different strata of the population. In order to discuss the British sociability in 19th century Rio de Janeiro, the objective of this study is to investigate the experiences of cricket clubs founded in Court/Federal District and Niteroi. It must be considered that this sport was seen as an expression of a typical ethos of those who had some degree of relationship with Britain. To reach this aim, as sources were used periodicals published in the city, especially those published in English, that had the audience of Anglophones living in the country capital and the provinces.
