Resumo: This paper aims at pointing out relevant questions on the analysis ofthe work of nineteenth-century cartoonist Ângelo Agostini, as wellas to present pertinent arguments on the analysis of images in thehistoriographical field. To this end, the text locates the artist’s productionin contextual terms, as an heir to an art tradition that has in thenineteenth century its first golden age: the political and social cartoon.Then, after a brief consideration of the analysis of images in historicalstudies, two cartoons produced by Agostini on the great theme ofabolitionism are interpreted as exemplary analysis.

Paratanto, o texto localiza a produção do artista em termos contextuais,localizando-o como um herdeiro de uma arte que tem no século XIX suaprimeira era de ouro: a charge.
