Resumo: Contribution to the field of research on representations of History of Brazil through the tracking and examination of proposed ideas and projects for a monument to Independece, wich would be built on the Ipiranga site. Its axis is the material and visual conformations successively proposed for the monument, from the 1820s to the end of the 19th century. It extends briefly to the Centenary of Independence, around whose commemorations the Ipiranga Monument was completed.
