Political anticlericalism of the second half of the nineteenth century in Europe and America had its dynamizing momentum with the Pontificate of Pius IX (1846-1878). As is well known, the Catholic Church in the nineteenth century will assume a series of positions and attitudes towards the political, social and cultural transformations that will put it on a collision course with modernity. The intense debates and fierce controversies that erupted during and afterthe papacy had an impact not only on Europe, but also on Latin America, producing tensions, crises and even armed conflicts involving society, political and religious power. Without an understanding of the contents of the Quanta Curaand Syllabuspackage insert, as well as the results of the Council of Vatican I, the political, cultural and iconoclastic virulence of anticlericals in the second half of the eighties cannot be adequately understood. The main purpose of this article is - through updated bibliography, national and international parliamentary sources - to present a panoramic picture of this reality, taking as reference point the political-parliamentary context of nineteenth-century Brazil.
