Resumo: The article analyzes the main characteristics of the Argentine immigrationand colonization law of 1876 and the discussions that took placeduring its treatment in the National Congress. The relations betweenthis law and Argentina’s policies during the second half of the nineteenthcentury on immigration are explained, as well as the gradual untyingof the latter with respect to colonization policies. In the last part, anoverall assessment of these policies is made, comparing them with thoseof some neighboring countries at the time.
