Resumo: The article deals with the complex relationship between liberalism andCatholicism by way of an analysis of attempts at reorganization of thesystem of ecclesiastical revenues and state budgetary support for the church,which took place in the Province of Buenos Aires between 1852 and 1862. Itstudies the controversies that ensued from these attempts amidst the publicopinion and in the governmental and parliamentary arena, both leadingdirectly to a rupture within porteño Catholicism due to the emergence ofFreemasonry. It maintains that within the two sectors which confronted eachother in these disputes – masons and anti-masons – the prevailing opinionfavored continued state support of the Church.

Estudia las controversias que esosintentos encendieron en la opinión pública y en el ámbito gubernativo yparlamentario, inextricablemente unidas a las que condujeron a la rupturadel catolicismo porteño a causa de la emergencia de la masonería.
