Resumo: This article aims to analyze the politic polarization in Pernambucobetween 1829 and 1831. The focus of this analysis is the journalistic workof Benedictine Monk Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama (1793-1852).Despite being very difficult to define the nature of the political projectsadvocated by each group, which expressed their ideas through the press, itis possible to identify the defense of two different kinds of sovereignty. Forthe first party, the notion of national sovereignty was the key principle thatshould organize the political institutions. The second party, which cannotbe roughly defined as absolutist, still considered monarchic sovereignty oneof the most important organizing principles of society.

O foco dessa análise é a atuaçãojornalística do monge beneditino Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama(1793-1852). Apesar de ser muito difícil definir a natureza dos projetospolíticos defendidos por cada agrupamento, que expressavam suas ideiasatravés da imprensa, é possível identificar a defesa de dois tipos distintosde soberania.
