Resumo: The political thought of the Mexican conservatism and that of the supporters of the Empire of Maximilian have been studied and assessed in recent years by historical research. Not only has the modern character of their ideological premises been shown, but also the difficulty in clearly differentiating it from its liberal and Republican counterpart. The following article addresses a set of texts published in the press by these political groups in which they expressed their definitions of concepts like progress, spirit of the century, tradition, and revolution. Regarding its conception of a changing historical process directed by progress, the way in which conservatives and monarchists understand the temporality and sense of history would not be so different from that of the constantly confronted liberals.
