CIVILIZE AND INSTRUCTION IN THE GRADUATE SERIES NA ESCOLA E NO LAR

Resumo: The article discusses the civilizing pedagogical project in the graduated reading series At school and at home, authored by São Paulo professor Thomaz Galhardo. Published between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, we found, based on the scattered evidence of the editions located in the research, that the first book in the series was circulated until 1992 and the others until the 1960s, revealing a set of reading practices whose Popularity is explained by the emergence of a specific publishing market for the didactic genre and its adaptation to the structure of primary education. Following the criterion of continuity of content across lessons and themes, these manuals are based on a new conception of social life, which needed to be learned at school. Through its constituent elements, the objective of the text is to present the civilizing project model present in this series for the moral and intellectual formation of Brazilian childhood. Following the methodological paths of Cultural History, we chose the categories of practices and representations to discuss how social perceptions are not neutral discourses, on the contrary, they produce strategies and practices that tend to impose authority, in order to legitimize a reforming project. From the analysis of school editions, we demonstrated the way in which a civilizational model is constructed, thought about and transformed into a teaching object through textbooks.

Publicado entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, encontramos, a partir de la evidencia dispersa de las ediciones localizadas en la investigación, que el primer libro de la serie circuló hasta 1992 y los demás hasta la década de 1960, revelando un conjunto de prácticas lectoras cuya popularidad se explica por el surgimiento de un mercado editorial específico para el género didáctico y su adaptación a la estructura de la educación primaria. Siguiendo el criterio de continuidad de contenidos entre lecciones y temas, estos manuales se basan en una nueva concepción de la vida social, que debía aprenderse en la escuela. A través de sus elementos constitutivos, el objetivo del texto es presentar el modelo de proyecto civilizador presente en esta serie para la formación moral e intelectual de la infancia brasileña. Siguiendo los caminos metodológicos de la Historia Cultural, elegimos las categorías de prácticas y representaciones para discutir cómo las percepciones sociales no son discursos neutrales, por el contrario, producen estrategias y prácticas que tienden a imponer la autoridad, con el fin de legitimar un proyecto reformador. A partir del análisis de las ediciones escolares, demostramos la forma en que un modelo civilizatorio se construye, se piensa y se transforma en objeto de enseñanza a través de los libros de texto.  O artigo discute o projeto pedagógico civilizador na série graduada de leitura Na escola e no lar de autoria do professor paulista Thomaz Galhardo. Editada entre o final do século XIX e início do XX, constatamos, a partir dos indícios esparsos das edições localizadas na pesquisa, que o primeiro livro da série circulou até 1992 e os demais até os anos 1960, revelando um conjunto de práticas de leitura cuja popularidade se explica pelo aparecimento de um mercado editorial específico para o gênero didático e sua adequação à estrutura do ensino primário. Seguindo o critério da continuidade dos conteúdos por lições e temas, esses manuais têm como base uma nova concepção de vida social, que precisava ser aprendida na escola. Por meio dos seus elementos constitutivos, o objetivo do texto é apresentar o modelo de projeto civilizador presente nessa série para a formação moral e intelectual da infância brasileira. Seguindo as trilhas metodológicas da História Cultural, elegemos as categorias de práticas e representações para discutirmos como as percepções do social não são discursos neutros, ao contrário, produzem estratégias e práticas que tendem a impor uma autoridade, de modo a legitimar um projeto reformador.
