Resumo: The Portuguese Inquisition tribunal in Goa, founded in 1561 and permanently abolished in 1812, left very little direct documentation. This fact directly resulted in a rather imprecise understanding of its history until recently. Newly published studies, considerable in number, demonstrate the possibility of knowing more of this history. Despite these advances, much remains to be done and known, especially about the periods of the tribunal's greatest activity, strangely the least studied: the second half of the 17th century and the first three quarters of the 18th century. From 1650 onwards, various lists of auto-da-fé are available but have not been thoroughly explored by historiography. These lists include defendants who heard their sentences in public autos-da-fé, but also in "private autos-da-fé" within the tribunals, often with little or no external audience. It is safe to assume that these lists, once they became a Portuguese tradition, contain most of the tribunal’s repressive results. The surviving lists form the basis of this database. In them defendants are summarily listed in groups (depending on their ethnic status, the offense, and the penalties), with their names and any nicknames; age; their “nation” (to use a term of that time), or we would say today, their nationality and/or ethnic group, or in the Indian context, their caste; their occupation; places of birth and residence; possibly the names of their spouse and parents; the offense or offenses they were charged with, and the spiritual, physical, and/or pecuniary penalties imposed. This database is composed of 3 charts: a main one, with information about 8,250 defendants judged by the Inquisition of Goa between 1650 and 1806, a second chart with the details of a list of voluntary defendants of 1781, and a third one, with all the known auto-da-fé lists kept at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal and Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo. A presentation in PDF is also available.
