This paper presents a vision of energy conservation in Brazil, with focus on the efficiency of the electric industry, discussing the viability of industrial projects for new and existing facilities, where the use of frequency drives can bring a substantial gain in energy savings. Many of these industrial drives are based on energy provided by thermal sources, such as the use of steam. Here we present a critical view of this practice to evaluate and propose the replace of these for electric motors powered by variable frequency drives, showing the gains inherent in these applications. This work is organized in 4 chapters, in addition to the Introduction and Conclusion. A bibliographic review on the history of electricity in Brazil in the introduction and the same in chapter 2 regarding the Procel; since its creation in 1985 by 2010, an assessment was made of several program gains as, for example, avoided spending for the expansion of supply in electricity, noting their areas of expertise and their programs. Chapter 3 presents an insight into the legal framework and the national electrical system which provide the legal basis of commercialization of electric power. Chapter 4 presents some examples of how we can insert energy efficiency in industry, through projects of Green and Brown Field types, because in this industry we have the highest consumption of electric power in the country and by consequence, the greatest potential for electrical efficiency. Chapter 5 was made a discussion about the expansion difficulties of the program's eficientization, with the interference caused by the presence of various bodies responsible for organizing the Brazilian electricity sector. Noted that there are conflicts between the interests of the visions planning matters and how to conduct policies focused on energy efficiency in Brazil. The conclusion provides a summary of what was seen at the moment and presents suggestions of what could be done to consolidate the energy efficiency in the industry.
