Resumo: Introduction: Delays in motor skills can impair cognitive, social and emotional development. On the other hand, well-developed motor skills help the cognitive functioning of children.Objective: To analyze the associations between thick motor skills and academic performance in Brazilian schoolchildren.Method: The sample consisted of 929 children of both sexes (5 to 11 years). Anthropometric measurements were performed (weight, height, waist circumference) and motor skills were measured by the KTK test. The habitual level of physical activity was assessed by means of a questionnaire and academic performance by school records.Results and conclusions: demonstrated that schoolchildren with good or very good motor coordination have 7.9 more chances of obtaining good or excellent academic concept in Portuguese and mathematics when compared to students with disturbance or Motor insufficiency. It was concluded that there was a positive relationship between gross motor skills and academic performance of schoolchildren.

Por outro lado, habilidades motoras bem desenvolvidas auxiliam o funcionamento cognitivo de crianças.Objetivo: Analisar as associações entre habilidades motoras grossas e rendimento acadêmico em escolares brasileiros.Método: A amostra foi composta por 929 crianças de ambos os sexos (5 a 11 anos). Foram realizadas medidas antropométricas (peso, estatura, circunferência abdominal) e as habilidades motoras foram mensuradas pelo de Teste KTK. O nível habitual de atividade física foi avaliado por meio de questionário e o desempenho acadêmico por registros escolares.Resultados e Conclusões: demonstraram que escolares com coordenação motora boa ou muito boa apresentam 7,9 mais chances de obter conceito acadêmico bom ou excelente em língua portuguesa e matemática quando comparados a estudantes com perturbação ou insuficiência motora.
