Facial expressions help in communication among human beings and also animals, having an important role in the survival of the species. Depressive symptoms may directly affect the ability to identify such emotions. The present study sought to evaluate the ability of individuals with depressive symptoms to recognize facial expressions with different emotional expressions. The sample was of 60 participants that attend­ed the Psychosocial Care Center. The instruments used were socio-de­mographic questionnaires, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and a database composed of 48 images of facial expressions (Software Facial Action Coding System). These results are in accordance with the Cogni­tive Model of Depression and contribute to a better understanding of the cognitive functioning of depression and emotional processing of facial expressions.
