Errors in the Administration of Medications Through Gastrointestinal Catheters: An Integrative Review

Objective: To summarize the errors in the administration of medication by gastrointestinal catheters.Method: Integrative literature review, based on an established protocol and performed in three databases, without temporal clipping, in any language. Such strategies occurred to detect the maximum number of articles associated with the theme. Only experimental and cross-sectional studies were included, due to the lack of other levels described in the selected articles.Results: The final sample consisted of seven articles, all with a quantitative approach. Inconsistent activities and analysis of the prevalence of errors were described before and after the intervention. There was a predominance of specific nursing journals and studies in adult Intensive Care Units (ICU). The solid form was more frequent than the liquid form in studies that described this relationship.Conclusion: The review provided knowledge of errors in different scenarios related to the administration of drugs through gastrointestinal catheters and described successful actions to reduce process deviations through barrier and training strategies.
