Resumo: The present study is inserted in the health and human development area, more specifically related to the quality of life (QOL), self-esteem and obesity among schoolchildren from 10 to 12 years old. Objective: This study aims to verify the prevalence of overweight, obesity and the level of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) of schoolchildren from a city in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. Method: The research sample was constituted by 341 subjects, in which 179 were male and 162 were female, with ages ranging from 10 to 12 years old. The overweight and obesity have been identified by the Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), the HRQOL was measured through the PedsQL 4.0 questionnaire and the self-esteem had its scores described through the Self-esteem Inventory, in an adapted version to Portuguese language. The sample frequency distribution was described in relation to gender, age, BMI and WC. Results: Afterwards, data related to the comparison between averages and confidence interval of the HRQOL and self-esteem dimensions, according to the control variable “gender”. Regarding the prevalence of overweight and obesity among genders, the found rates were of 25,1%, for females and 24,7% for male,in the case of WC 19.9 % of the sample are above the 80th percentile , the cutoff point for central obesity.Concerning HRQOL and self-esteem, both averages were considered to be good in all analyzed dimensions, however, the only dimension that presented statistically significant difference (p<0, 05), among gender, was the dimension of the quality of school life. Conclusion:Despite the good result regarding the HRQOL and self-esteem, the prevalence of overweight and obesity were considerably high in the schoolchildren, therefore, it is suggested an intervention in the public policies and the city community, searching for alternatives to solve this problem, with the objective of preventing and promoting health. From the results obtained in this study, a Health- Related Quality of Life booklet has been developed.

From the results obtained in this study, a Health- Related Quality of Life booklet has been developed.O presente estudo está inserido na área da saúde e desenvolvimento humano, mais especificamente relacionado à Qualidade de Vida (QV), autoestima e obesidade infantil de escolares de 10 a 12 anos. The present study is inserted in the health and human development area, more specifically related to the quality of life (QOL), self-esteem and obesity among schoolchildren from 10 to 12 years old.
