Resumo: The present ethnographic research was conducted between June 2012 and February 2014, and focused on the artisans of the Association Art'Escama, in Pintada Island, Archipelago neighborhood, Porto Alegre / RS, where the metropolis is the background that provides cultural and social diversity. The objectives of this study were to learn about the group’s memories, practices and daily strategies for survival using an intensively interactive approach. The concepts of collective memory (Halbwachs 2006) and daily life (Certeau, 1994) were critical to accomplish these goals as they provide a solid conceptual framework to account for the ways in which the subjects live and understand their lives, and put together their past, present and perspectives for the future. It can be said that this study is a mosaic of memories and shared daily activities, where basic primordial elements such as gender, feminization of poverty, economic solidarity and autonomy are seen. In addition, the group has their memories and daily lives traversed by social, economic and gender inequality. The work is part of the line of research in Professional Memory, Culture and Identity, in the Masters Program in Social Memory and Cultural Heritage at the University La Salle – Unilasalle,RS.
