On the daily care regime among the Pataxó of the Boca da Mata village

Resumo: The objective of this article is to address the relationship of the Pataxó from the Boca da Mata village (TI Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal, southern Bahia) with a group of plants called native bushes in the context of their body care practices. The argument that guides me is that these vegetables, which the Pataxó women transform into bush medicines and circulate through organic knowledge about the plant biodiversity that abounds in the territory, constitute fundamental elements in their manufacturing and conservation procedures human life, as well as in the ways of curing the various illnesses and diseases that can afflict a person. However, it is precisely because these vegetables and the medicines produced with them in the daily life of the village are not something “harmless” and devoid of agency, that their use requires a strong economy of attention both on the part of those who prepare them and those who use them. They use, depending on the dosage, the faith and trust so dear to Pataxó sociability.

O argumento que me guia é o de que estes vegetais, que as mulheres pataxó transformam em remédios de mato e fazem circular através de um refinado conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade vegetal que abunda no território, consistem em elementos fundamentais nos seus procedimentos de fabricação e conservação da vida humana, assim como nas formas de cura para os diversos males e enfermidades que podem abater uma pessoa. Todavia, é exatamente pelo fato destes vegetais e dos remédios com eles produzidos no cotidiano da aldeia não serem algo “inócuo” e destituído de agência, que a sua utilização demanda uma forte economia da atenção tanto por parte daquelas que os elaboram quanto daqueles que os utilizam, dependendo, sobretudo, da posologia, da fé e da confiança tão caras à sociabilidade pataxó.El objetivo de este artículo es abordar la relación de los Pataxó de la aldea Boca da Mata (TI Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal, sur de Bahía) con un grupo de vegetales en el contexto de sus prácticas de cuidado del cuerpo humano. El argumento que me guía es que estos vegetales, que las mujeres Pataxó transforman en medicinas y circulan a través de refinados conocimientos sobre la biodiversidad vegetal que abunda en el territorio, constituyen elementos fundamentales en sus procedimientos de elaboración y conservación de la salud humana, así como de en las formas de curar las diversas enfermedades y dolencias que pueden aquejar a una persona.
