Resumo: The historical of regional socioeconomic inequality along the centuries in Brazildemand a new posture of public and private power to achieve configurations moreharmonious in the aspects of income, education and quality of life of populations. Inthat way, understanding the population and social development evolution in the regionalcontext contribute to guide public polices and projects of private initiative. This studyaimed to use the Geographic Information System - GIS to analyze the Human Development Index - HDI and population in Microregion Guanambi - BA. The resultshas shown that the city of Guanambi was highlighted in the three periods in themicroregion regarding to HDI, reaching values of 0.413, 0.548 and 0.673 in 1991, 2000and 2010, respectively. The municipalities of lowest HDI were the municipalities ofLagoa Real, Matina and Malhada evaluated years. It is important to mention a reductionof the total population in some municipalities in the Microregion. The study revealed anunfavorable position of the municipalities of Microregion Guanambi compared to theHDI, with layers of medium and low qualification. The research reports a highpopulation in the countryside, which requires greater attention these communities

The research reports a highpopulation in the countryside, which requires greater attention these communitiesO histórico de desigualdade socioeconômico regional ao longo dos séculos no Brasil exige uma nova postura do Poder Público e privado para alcançar configurações mais harmoniosas nos aspectos renda, educação e qualidade de vida das populações. Compreender a evolução populacional e do desenvolvimento social no contexto regional contribuem para nortear políticas públicas e projetos da inciativa privada. Este estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar a importância do uso do Sistema de Informação Geográfica – SIG para subsidiar a análise do Índice Desenvolvimento Humano - IDH e da população na Microrregião de Guanambi – BA. Os resultados demonstraram que a cidade de Guanambi teve destaque nos três períodos analisados na Microrregião no que se refere ao IDH, alcançando os valores de 0.413, 0.548 e 0.673 em 1991, 2000 e 2010 respectivamente. Os municípios de menores IDH foram os de Lagoa Real, Matina e Malhada. Destaca-se que houve uma redução da população total em alguns municípios da Microrregião. Apesar do destaque de Guanambi em relação IDH na microrregião, o estudo revelou uma posição desfavorável dos demais municípios em relação ao IDH, com estratos de qualificação médio e baixo.
