The land-cover and land-use in the hydrographic basin of Ribeirão do Brejão, Triângulo Mineiro: correlation with components of the physical environment

This paper presents the study of land-cover and land-use changes in the hydrographic basin of Ribeirão do Brejão, Nova Ponte (MG), between the years 2005 and 2020, for mapping at a scale of 1:25.000. Based on the results of the mappings, these data were correlated with components of the physical environment by geoenvironmental profiles. The Ribeirão do Brejão basin is located at the northeast edge of the Paraná Sedimentary Basin, at a plateau dissected by the Araguari River, characterized by flat summits covered by Oxisols and slopes constituted by colluvial ramps and soils of lower development, whose characteristics are associated with the context of land occupation. Since the decade of 1930s, government policies have been encouraged the advance of land occupation at the Brazilian Cerrado. This basin is an example of modern agriculture expansion due to public policies which accelerated the modification/substitution of the natural cover. Even though the area had already been affected by the agriculture expansion until 2005, it is clear the substitution of the forests and pasture for crops during these 15 years. Furthermore, the increasing number of reservatories is to provide water for irrigation, mainly in geological, geomorphological and pedological contexts, which allow intensive agricultural activities.
