Resumo: The Formoso River is an important tributary of the São Francisco River in the northwest of Minas Gerais State. With its basin inserted in the Cerrado Biome, its waters drain large agropecuary landed estates, what influences directly the physicochemical characteristics of superficial waters and stream sediments. The Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn parameters were analyzed in 22 sediment samples in 11 points by using the chemical acid extraction technique and ICP-OES reading, and the results were compared to the CONAMA resolution 344/2004 Level 1. Mineral characterization was accomplished by DXR and geochemical lithotypes analysis was made by ICP-OES. It revealed that the levels of Cd and Cr are above (TEL) the levels recommended by the CONAMA. The presence of these metals in sediments results directly of the metal-organic residues generated by commercial agriculture. The geochemistry signature for the Cr element present in the sediment confirms the geological natural contribution. Quartz is the predominant mineral on sediment, thepresence of clay minerals suggests a greater or minor interchange of metallic cations from the sediment to the water column.

Editora Unimontes2009-12-31info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionArtigoapplication/pdfhttps://www.periodicos.unimontes.br/index.php/cerrados/article/view/2950Revista Cerrados; v. 7 n. 01 (2009): Revista Cerrados (versão impressa); 79-902448-26921678-8346reponame:Revista Cerrados (Montes Claros.
