APPLICATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY IN WATER TREATMENT: A REVIEW

Resumo: | Nanotechnology offers the ability to control matter at the nanoscale and create materials that have specific properties with a specific function, which allows their application in several areas. The main areas of impact for nanotechnology in relation to environmental applications including water treatment are divided into: treatment and remediation, sensing and detection and pollution control. The use of nanostructured iron oxides such as maghemite has been deeply studied due to the advantages this material presents against other materials. Its characteristics include its low cost, ease of separation through external magnetic fields, high surface area, high adsorption capacity and efficient action as a photocatalyst, thus facilitating its use in processes such as coagulation flocculation. From this context, the present study in the form of a bibliographical review aims to contribute with the current bibliography about the use of nanoparticles of iron oxide in the treatment of water. |

As principais áreas de impacto para a nanotecnologia em relação às aplicações ambientais incluindo o tratamento de água dividem-se em: tratamento e remediação, sensoriamento e detecção e controle de poluição. A utilização de óxidos de ferro vem sendo profundamente estudada devido às vantagens que este material apresenta frente a outros materiais. Dentre suas características destacam-se seu baixo custo, facilidade na separação por meio de campos magnéticos externos, elevada área superficial e alta capacidade de adsorção, facilitando assim, a sua utilização em processos como os de coagulação floculação. Dentro deste contexto e da relevância desta temática no cenário científico atual, o presente estudo objetivou contribuir por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, com a literatura existente acerca de utilização de nanopartículas de óxido de ferro no tratamento de água.
