Resumo: Em Odontologia, a ausência de equilíbrio oclusal apresenta-se como ameaça à estabilidade e sucesso dos resultadosprovenientes de reabilitações protéticas extensas ou tratamentosortodônticos/ ortopédicos. Quando isto acontece,independente do resultado estático ser considerado satisfatório,uma provável presença de contatos prematuros podealterar o posicionamento mandibular, seja na condição derepouso e/ou durante a realização de seus movimentos funcionais.Nestas situações, a eliminação das referidas interferênciasdeve ser realizada por meio de desgastes ouacréscimos nas superfícies oclusais, permitindo maior condiçãode estabilidade ao posicionamento dentário previamenteestabelecido.
