Resumo: This study aims to identify, among several factors considered, those who are more strongly related to the failure of new ventures. To do so, we established the following intermediate goals: a) identify the reasons for closure of new enterprises with less than two years, b) identify, among the factors studied, those that best explain the differences between the two groups: companies that closed operations and those did not; c) develop qualifying procedures to discriminate firms with greater risk of closing operations from companies with lower risk. To achieve the objectives of this study, we used the database originally built by the Kauffman Foundation with data from survey research developed within 4926 U.S. companies founded in 2004. Of this total, 93 companies were selected and had its activities stopped until the second round of the survey, conducted in 2005, and the other 1804 remained at opened for business. For this study, we used the logistic regression method as a tool for analysis and development of discriminatory model. The results shows that, despite considering factors related to the characteristics of the owners and the company characteristics, the selected factors are not sufficient to explain the differences between the two groups of companies that closed their operations and businesses that did not closed their operations after the first year of operation. An adjacent contribution of this study is the incentive to explore quantitative approaches, using databases fairly consistent, in the discussion of conditioning factors of entrepreneurial ventures’ failure.
