Resumo: This paper presents an analysis of how the level of maturity in project management impacts the success of engineering projects companies with a focus on mining. The selected cases show mid-sized companies in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte that are constituted of multidisciplinary teams. Thus, we used a descriptive method for this research, and reported and analyzed the characteristics that are related to the process of maturity in project management for a subsequent determination of the effects that increase the probability of success in engineering companies. In this research we used the MMGP-Sectorial Project Management Maturity model of Darci Prado, in addition to conducting on-site interviews with project managers. The results indicate that the companies surveyed are at the level classified as level two. In this degree of maturity, the companies present sporadic actions, reactivity of a large part of the work team, low interest for the top management and stimulus to short term strategic vision. Evidences pointed out that the attainment of the goals established for the projects is more easily reached as the strategic alignment of the projects with the organization occurs, and if the technical qualification of the team is part of the strategy. These factors are achieved by organizations in the course of acquiring maturity in the domain of tools, work processes and skills to manage their projects.
