Resumo: | Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative autoimmune disease that affects about 2.3million people worldwide. Unfortunately there is no cure for the disease, but there are treatments that can alleviate the symptoms, prevent complications and provide better quality of life for the carrier of Multiple Sclerosis, among them are the drug, psychological and nutritional therapies. Studies have related vitamin deficiency with the presence of several autoimmune diseases, among the best known are Insulindependent Diabetes Mellitus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Multiple Sclerosis. The profile of these patients has in common, low levels of the hormone produced by vitamin D (called calcitriol). The hormone has been studied in order to collaborate in the treatment of these diseases, because in addition to collaborating for calcium homeostasis it also acts as an immunomodulator on the cells of the immune system. In this literature review, information was obtained that MS patients who participated in experiments where high doses of vitamin D were used as a supplement, obtained a decrease in the appearance of new lesions and active lesions, a considerable decrease in recurrences and relapses and an improvement in functional capacity, and that the preventive use of the hormone is also recommended, since it has no side effects as long as it is done under medical guidance. It can be concluded, therefore, that vitamin D is a promising ally in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and that more clinical trials are needed to evaluate its efficacy and possible use in the clinic. |
