PARENTS' PERCEPTION OF THE TIME USE OF ACTIVE VIDEO GAMES OF THEIR CHILDREN: PRELIMINARY STUDY COMPARING THE USE BY SEX AND AGE GROUPS

Resumo: The aim of the study was to identify the perceptions of parents regarding the time use of active videogames, by sex and age groups. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study subjects were 120 parents and / or guardians of scholars 6-13 years of two schools in the private schools in the central region of Londrina. The average age of the children was 9.3 ± 1.7 years. We used a self-administered questionnaire to parents, adapted from the Active Gaming Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0, using frequencies, mean and standard deviation. The U Mann-Whitney and Fisher's exact test were used with a significance level of 5%. The scholars uses active videogame from 1-2 days a week and on weekdays (95.8%), and during the weekend (88.3%), playing active video games for 2h/day. There was no association between sex or between age groups, both during the week (P = 0.059 vs P = 0.939), and during the weekend (P = 0.118 vs P = 0.924), respectively. There was also no significant difference in mean levels of time (minutes) for use of active videogames, or by gender or by age groups, both during the week (P = 0.083 vs P = 0.610), and during the weekend (P = 0.086 vs. p = 0.506), respectively. The perception of parents regarding the time use of active videogames, did not show significant differences between duration of use of active video games and the gender and age group. Therefore, we can not say that there is a different pattern of use of active video games between boys and girls, nor that there is differentiation between younger and older teens.

Trata-se de um estudo descritivo transversal. Foram sujeitos do estudo 120 pais e/ou responsáveis de escolares de 6 a 13 anos de duas escolas da Rede Privada da região central de Londrina. A média de idade dos escolares foi de 9,3±1,7 anos. Utilizou-se um questionário auto administrado aos pais, adaptado do Active Gaming Questionnaire. Os dados foram analisados pelo SPSS 20.0, por meio de frequências, média e desvio padrão. O teste U de Mann-Whitney e o teste exato de Fisher foram utilizados tendo nível de significância de 5%. Os escolares utilizam o videogame ativo de 1 a 2 dias na semana e tanto durante a semana (95,8%), quanto durante o final de semana (88,3%), jogam videogames ativos por até 2h/dia. Não houve associações nem entre o sexo, nem entre os grupos de idade, tanto durante a semana (p=0,059 vs p=0,939), quanto durante o final de semana (p=0,118 vs p=0,924), respectivamente. Também não houve diferença significativa nos índices médios de tempo (minutos) de uso de videogame ativo pelos escolares, nem por sexo, nem por grupos de idade, tanto durante a semana (p=0,083 vs p=0,610), quanto durante o final de semana (p=0,086 vs p=0,506), respectivamente. A percepção dos pais em relação ao tempo de uso de jogos de videogame ativos de seus filhos não evidenciaram diferenças significativas entre o tempo de utilização do videogame ativo e as variáveis sexo e faixa etária.
