Resumo: With the passing of age, being physically active or remaining physically active can become difficult due to the functional, emotional or social barriers inherent to the aging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of physical activity and the sociodemographic and behavioral profile of elderly residents in the capitals of the Brazilian states and in the Federal District. Descriptive study with a sample of adults interviewed by the Surveillance of Risk Factors and Protection for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Surveillance - Vigitel (2016). A total of 53,210 adults answered the interview. Of these respondents, 18,854 adults (6,199 men and 12,655 women) were then 60 years or older. Walking was the most reported physical activity. The most adopted weekly frequency was 3 to 4 days per week with a duration of 60 minutes or more. The percentage were more frequent for optimistic health self-assessment and less frequent for tobacco use when compared to their inactive peers. The study revealed that approximately half of the sample denied participation in leisure-time physical activity, with a more unfavorable scenario for women. The pattern of PA in the active elderly was aligned with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. The promotion of active lifestyles should be part of health care planning for the elderly.

The pattern of PA in the active elderly was aligned with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. The promotion of active lifestyles should be part of health care planning for the elderly.
