Resumo: | OBJECTIVE: To characterize the participation of young athletes in the Portuguese indoor (PC) and outdoor (AL) track and field athletics championships and to quantify the likelihood of young athletes participating, being finalists or medallists in the disciplines that characterize the Portuguese Athletics Championships.METHODS: In this retrospective descriptive study (1990 to 2019), 2576 athletes were considered (female, n=1088; male, n=1488). The probability of young athletes (U18, U20, U21 or U23) being participants, finalists or medallists in each Portuguese athletics championships discipline was assessed by calculating the odds ratio (OR).RESULTS: We found that (i) >70% of young athletes took part in the Portuguese athletics championships, and (ii) less than half of these young athletes took part in the Portuguese athletics championships as seniors. In addition, the probability of young female athletes (i) taking part in the 60m, 60m hurdles, and high jump, and being a finalist in the high jump in PC is high, but being a medallist in the high jump is moderate; and (ii) taking part in the 100m, 110m hurdles and high jump, and being a finalist in the high jump in AL is also high, but being a medallist in the high jump is small. The likelihood of young male athletes (i) taking part in the 60m, 200m, and high jump in PC is moderate, as is the likelihood of taking part in the 200m and high jump in AL.CONCLUSION: In general, and regardless of the context of the competition (indoor or outdoor), the participation of young athletes in the Portuguese athletics championships (1990 to 2019) was high (70-80%), but the probability of medalling was low. However, in females, the probability of being a finalist in the high jump is high, but the probability of medalling is moderate (PC) or small (AL). |
