Resumo: Tilapia accounts for 62% of the Brazilian fish production. This chain, which is constantly growing, is structured around poles. In this context, the objective of this research is to analyze the upgrading of the chain, using a regional perspective. The Global Value Chains (GVC) approach was used to delimit the concept of upgrading, as well as to discuss its relationship with other analytical elements of the approach. Based on data collected from 567 tilapia production units (TPUs), in 2019, six indicators of upgrading were constructed and analyzed. The research points out that regional differences in upgrading indicators can be explained by several factors such as, size of TPUs, governance models, role of technical assistance, and input-output structure. Finally, given the growing internationalization of the chain, the study highlights the importance of developing a research agenda in this field.

Esta cadena, en constante crecimiento, se estructura en torno a polos. En este contexto, el objetivo de esta investigación es analizar el upgrading de la cadena, utilizando una perspectiva regional. Se utilizó el enfoque de las Cadenas Globales de Valor (CGV) para delimitar el concepto de upgrading, así como para discutir su relación con otros elementos analíticos del enfoque. A partir de datos recopilados en 567 unidades de producción de tilapia (UTP), en 2019, se construyeron y analizaron seis indicadores de mejoramiento. La investigación señala que las diferencias regionales en los indicadores de mejoramiento pueden explicarse por varios factores, como el tamaño de las UTP, los modelos de gobernanza, el papel de la asistencia técnica y la estructura de insumo-producto. Por último, dada la creciente internacionalización de la cadena, el estudio destaca la importancia de desarrollar una agenda de investigación en este campo.A tilápia é responsável por 62% da produção piscícola brasileira. Essa cadeia, em constante crescimento, se organiza em torno de polos produtivos. Nesse contexto, o objetivo dessa pesquisa é analisar o upgrading da cadeia, a partir de uma perspectiva regionalizada. A abordagem de Cadeias Globais de Valor (CGV) foi utilizada para delimitar o conceito de upgrading, assim como para discutir sua relação com outros elementos analíticos da abordagem. A partir de dados coletados junto 567 unidades produtoras de tilápias (UPTs), em 2019, foram construídos e analisados seis indicadores de upgrading. A pesquisa aponta que as diferenças regionais nos indicadores de upgrading podem ser explicadas por diversos fatores tais como, tamanho das UPTs, modelos de governança, papel da assistência técnica, e estrutura da rede de fornecedores e processadores.
