Metonymy in the interpretation of neological lexical units

Resumo: This work intends to discuss the role of metonymy in the interpretation of suffixed neological lexical units. The data are neological adjectives and verbs extracted from Brazilian written press, which are classified in relation to the metonymical patterns present in their meaning. Metonymy is analysed as a process which relates linguistic meaning to the speaker’s extralinguistic knowledge. The data here presented corroborate other studies on the same subject, specially Basilio (2007, 2011).

São apresentados adjetivos e verbos neológicos coletados na imprensa escrita brasileira, os quais são classificados quanto aos padrões metonímicos presentes em seu significado. A metonímia é analisada como um processo que relaciona o significado linguístico com o conhecimento extralinguístico do falante.
