Food production for self-consumption in the western region of the Brazilian State of Santa Catarina

Resumo: | Food production for self-consumption in Brazil until recently was associated with backwardness and subsistence agriculture, which would tend to disappear. However, issues related to changes in the agri-food system and the emergence of criticism of the excessive industrialization of agriculture and its social and environmental consequences give new meaning to the subject, which is now subject of research. Given the scarce knowledge produced on the subject, this article aims to characterize the food production for self-consumption in the western region of Santa Catarina (Brazil), surveying ways and quantities of this production and identifying the reasons why farmers stopped producing some products, besides verifying the economic importance of production for self-consumption. This is a quantitative research covering 112 municipalities, with the application of 381 questionnaires to family farmers in the western region of Santa Catarina. As a result, it was observed that production for self-consumption is present in all properties, even those producing raw materials for large agri-food companies. This production is characterized by its diversification and contributes decisively to the food and nutritional security of farmers in the region. Differences in spatial distribution related to the quantity and variety of what is produced for household consumption were also noted, and the main causes that led farmers to stop producing some products were raised. It was also observed the economic importance of production for self-consumption, because the interviewees reported saving a good part of monthly income, not having to buy the food produced in the family farm in the grocery stores. |

Sin embargo, los problemas relacionados con los cambios en el sistema agroalimentario y la aparición de críticas a la industrialización excesiva de la agricultura y sus consecuencias sociales y ambientales dan un nuevo significado al tema, que ahora es objeto de investigación. Este artículo caracteriza la producción de alimentos para autoconsumo en la región oeste de Santa Catarina, examinando los tipos y cantidades de esta producción, identificando las razones por las cuales los agricultores dejaron de producir algunos productos y verificando la importancia económica de la producción para autoconsumo. Esta es una investigación cuantitativa que abarca 112 municipios, con la aplicación de 381 cuestionarios a agricultores familiares. Como resultado, se observó que la producción para el autoconsumo está presente en todas las propiedades, incluso en aquellas que producen materias primas para grandes empresas agroalimentarias. Esta producción se caracteriza por su diversificación y contribuye decisivamente a la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional de los agricultores. También se observaron diferencias en la distribución espacial relacionadas con la cantidad y variedad de lo que se produce para el consumo familiar, y se plantearon las principales causas que llevaron a los agricultores a dejar de producir algunos productos. También se observó la importancia económica de la producción para el autoconsumo, porque los entrevistados informaron que ahorraron una buena parte de los ingresos mensuales, sin tener que comprar en los alimentos que producen.A produção de alimentos para o autoconsumo no Brasil até recentemente era associada ao atraso e a agricultura de subsistência, que tenderia a desaparecer. Entretanto, questões relacionadas às transformações no sistema agroalimentar e à emergência de críticas da excessiva industrialização da agricultura e de suas consequências sociais e ambientais dão novo significado ao tema, que passa a ser objeto de pesquisas. Assim, este artigo faz uma caracterização da produção de alimentos para o autoconsumo na região oeste de Santa Catarina, levantando tipos e quantidades dessa produção e identificando as razões pelas quais agricultores deixaram de produzir alguns produtos, além de verificar a importância econômica da produção para o autoconsumo. Trata-se de pesquisa de caráter quantitativo abrangendo 112 municípios, com a aplicação de 381 questionários junto a agricultores familiares da região oeste de Santa Catarina. Como resultado, observou-se que a produção para o autoconsumo está presente em todas as propriedades, mesmo naquelas produtoras de matérias primas para as grandes empresas agroalimentares. Esta produção caracteriza-se pela sua diversificação e contribui decisivamente para a segurança alimentar e nutricional dos agricultores da região.
