Sustainability as a development strategy: the case of the “green alcohol” in Capixaba – Acre

Today, in face of the environmental issue, the emergence of economic development models that recognize the carrying capacity of the planet earth and respect its limits is remarkable. The proposed Ecodevelopment emerged in a context of controversy over the relations and economic environment as an alternative to growth that reconciles economic viability, social equity and ecological prudence. Later it was called sustainable development as a conciliatory proposal, which acknowledges that technical progress effectively relativizes environmental limits, but does not eliminate them, and that growth is necessary but not sufficient for the elimination of poverty and social inequalities. Finally, it was defined as one that meets current needs without sacrificing the ability to meet its future. In view of these considerations, we point out the “alcohol paper” as a proposal to promote agribusiness in the Amazon “sucroalcooleiro” West, its contributions and drawbacks in the process of sustainable development.
