A comparative analysis of the perceptions about desertification among inhabitants of rural and urban areas in a semi-arid region municipality in Brazil

The purpose of this research was to make a comparative analysis of the perceptions about desertification among the rural and urban population in the city of Parelhas. This city belongs to the core of desertification in semi-arid region of the Rio Grande do Norte State. Forms were applied for the data collection. For data analysis the Chi-square test, Fisher exact test and correlation analysis were used. The main results, in general, show that urban residents heard more about desertification that the residents of the rural zone. For this latter group climate change, increasing temperature, pollution and soil erosion are related to desertification. The respondents consider that the municipality is in the process of desertification. The urban residents had association with the reply “yes” while the countryside residents were associated with the alternatives “not” or “doesn't know”, according to correspondence analysis.
