Relations between popular culture, capital and sustainable development in the city of São Luiz Paraitinga – SP – Brazil

Resumo: The preservation of cultural manifestations relevant to popular culture represents an important strategy for preserving social cohesion of a community. This action is strategic for the implementation of initiatives related to sustainable development adequate to promote quality of life and historical memory relevant to the consolidation of social cohesion. This paper results from research that discusses the correlation between popular culture, social capital and sustainable development, discussing the preservation of popular manifestations in the context of urbanization in Brazil. São Luiz do Paraitinga was chosen for the research because this city has a great number of popular culture manifestations. The research has exploratory and descriptive historical approach to evaluate the relationship between popular culture, social capital and sustainable development in relation to the intense urbanization in Brazil. It appears that preservation of these manifestations of popular culture, features from the city chosen as object of this research, are related to the existence and accumulation of social capital among residents, aspect that promotes local development.

Essa ação é estratégica para a implementação de ações relacionadas ao desenvolvimento sustentável, adequadas à promoção da qualidade de vida e da memória histórica pertinente à consolidação da coesão social. Este artigo resulta de uma investigação que discute a correlação entre a cultura popular, o capital social e o desenvolvimento sustentável, problematizando a preservação das manifestações populares no contexto de forte urbanização do Brasil. O município escolhido para a pesquisa foi São Luiz do Paraitinga, que apresenta um conjunto expressivo de manifestações da cultura popular. A pesquisa desenvolvida foi exploratória e descritiva, com abordagem histórica para a avaliação da relação entre a cultura popular, o capital social e o desenvolvimento sustentável em relação à intensa urbanização brasileira. Verifica-se que as manifestações de preservação da cultura popular, características do município estudado, possuem relação com a existência e com o acúmulo de capital social entre os munícipes, aspecto que favorece o desenvolvimento local.
