Crime, religion and consumption: youth social representations of conflict and spirituality in rap narratives

Resumo: Privileging the discourses analysis of rap narratives composed by brazilian rappers indicated for Hutúz Awards in the year 2009, when the largest hip hop festival in Latin America recognized the best hip hop artists of the decade, this article problematizes youth social representations of crime, spirituality and consumption as a possibility to understand the interaction between political and spiritual discourses in the hip hop culture. The objective is to analyse the meanings, the values and the beliefs of peripheral youth and their social representations in a context where the money operates as a force capable to redefine the meanings of crime, religion and consumption. As a result, this analyses demonstrates a the development of a new urban phenomenon: the expansion of the funk music and the ostentation of consumption in poor localities where the political discourse of hip hop was predominant.Key words: rap, conflict, youth.

Para isso, toma como corpus empírico narrativas de rap que repercutem as tensões e, também, as conexões de sentido existentes no discurso político e no discurso espiritual da cultura hip hop, num contexto em que o dinheiro é uma força que redefine as compreensões do crime, da religião e do consumo. As letras de rap selecionadas são de grupos e artistas indicados ao Prêmio Hutúz 2009, que premiou os melhores rappers brasileiros da década passada. As letras de rap são abordadas à luz da análise de discurso com o objetivo de conhecer os sentidos, os valores e as crenças construídos e compartilhados coletivamente pela juventude pobre urbana como representações sociais estruturantes das suas vidas sociais e, por isso, orientadoras das condutas.
