Destination of urban waste : discussions on the construction of incineration furnaces in Manguinhos (RJ)

Resumo: This paper presents an overview of the context which has culminated in the design and construction of the first complex of urban waste incineration ovens in Rio de Janeiro, still in the 19th century. The starting point of the analysis are historical documents (reports, plans and images) available at the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, newspapers of the period, gathered to contextualize the project as a response to the national political-sanitary scenario of then. The urban-sanitary conditions of the city of Rio de Janeiro is discussed and the relevance of waste disposal in urban improvement interventions is identified, in the period between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The  municipal urban waste incineration facilities in Manguinhos is presented in details and a  digital 3D model was built based on archaeological research and historical sources. Finally reflects on the causes of the incineration facilities demolition and the destination of this territory.

O ponto de partida da análise são documentos históricos (relatórios, plantas e imagens) disponíveis no Arquivo Geral da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, acrescido de notícias de jornais do período, reunidos para contextualizar o empreendimento como uma resposta ao cenário político-sanitário nacional de então. Discute-se as condições urbano-sanitárias da cidade do Rio de Janeiro e identifica-se a relevância do descarte de lixo nas intervenções de melhoramentos urbanos, no período compreendido entre o final do século XIX e início do XX. Apresenta-se detalhes do funcionamento do complexo de incineração de lixo urbano municipal em Manguinhos, reconstruídos digitalmente com base em pesquisas arqueológicas e fontes históricas.
