Resumo: The quota system for black students to enter public universities began to be implemented in Brazil in the early 2000s. Throughout this decade there were feverish debates among intellectuals, with arguments for and against, about this system. Twenty years after the implementation of the first quota system, from UERJ, this article sought to verify whether one of the arguments against the quota system was and/or still is valid: the assumption that its implementation would promote violent racial conflicts in public universities. A brief historical incursion into the republican period was carried out, in order to verify if there was a history of violent racial conflicts in Brazil. Survey research was also carried out at 69 federal universities, as well as documentary research (with dissertations, theses, and academic-scientific articles) with the same objective. It was found that assumptions of violent racial conflicts were not new in Brazil, nor did they materialize.
