Resumo: In establishing a dialogue between History and Literature, referenced in the Foucaultian perspective, we aim to reflect on the Brazilian scientific production about women in the transition from the nineteenth century to the twentieth, in O Cortiço, by the naturalist writer Aluísio Azevedo. In this publication, the characters of women, in approaching marginal identities, counterposed the model of femininity established by the rigid moral code legitimized by science. We aim to demonstrate, through the analysis of the female characters in comparison with the scientific knowledge of the time, that normality is a normative institute discursively forged.
