Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s electoral-campaign discourse (2007). A case of not convergent hybrid ethos

Resumo:  In the framework of political discourse analysis that incorporates the rhetorical notion of ethos (Amossy, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010; Charaudeau, 2005; MAINGUENEAU, 1987, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2008), this article examines the construction of a not convergent hybrid ethos in the electoral-campaign discourse produced in 2007 by Argentina’s presidential candidate Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. We term it hybrid because her speech is dominated by two images of herself which by their nature are called expert pedagogical ethos, linked with a teaching scenography, and ethos of femininity. We call it non-convergent because althought these two images are strategies to legitimize her candidacy, in certain discursive sections ethos of femininity tends to undermine the persuasive force of expert pedagogical ethos. For the analysis, we use a qualitative methodology that emphasizes the interpretation of diverse aspects of studied speeches enunciation.

Esse ethos é qualificado de híbrido na medida em que na sua manifestação discursiva predominam duas imagens que, pelas suas características, denominamos ethos pedagógico-experto, ao qual é inerente uma cenografia professoral, e ethos da feminilidade. A qualificação de não convergente responde ao fato de que, embora as duas imagens constituam estratégias de legitimação da candidatura, em certos trechos discursivos o ethos da feminilidade tende a diminuir a força persuasiva do ethos pedagógicoexperto. Na análise aplica-se uma metodologia qualitativa que dá a prioridade à interpretação de diversos aspectos da dimensão enunciativa dos discursos estudados.En el marco del análisis del discurso político que recupera la noción retórica de ethos (AMOSSY, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2010; CHARAUDEAU, 2005; MAINGUENEAU, 1987, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2008), este artículo estudia la construcción de un ethos híbrido no convergente en el discurso electoral producido en 2007 por la entonces candidata a la presidencia de Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Calificamos a este ethos de híbrido porque en su discurso predominan dos imágenes de sí que por sus características hemos denominado ethos pedagógico-experto, al que le es inherente una escenografía profesoral, y ethos de la feminidad. Lo calificamos de no convergente porque si bien estas dos imágenes constituyen estrategias de legitimación de su candidatura, en ciertos tramos discursivos el ethos de la feminidad tiende a disminuir la fuerza persuasiva del ethos pedagógicoexperto.
