Linguistic Choices and Cultural Values in the Interactional Construction of Brazilians’ and Italians’ Requests

Resumo: | Requests can be considered “basic social acts”, used in various contexts in everyday life. The premise here is the assumption that the illocutionary force of requests is constructed in interactional moves, which define the linguistic activity mingling conventionality and intentionality. Analyzing interactions can help understand these moves, especially when languages and cultures are compared. To this end, 40 role-plays recorded by Brazilians and Italians controlling the variables of social distance, age, degree of imposition were investigated. The transcriptions were coded to verify how the interactional sequences are constructed and what elements they are constituted of. Similarities were observed in the main linguistic choices that determine the construction of the interactional sequence in both languages, as well as differences, mainly regarding the type of contact established with the interlocutor, based on different cultural values: empathy in the case of Brazilians, and respect for other people’s territory in the case of Italians. |

Se asume que su fuerza ilocutiva se construye sobre movimientos interaccionales, que definen la acción lingüística entre la convencionalidad y la intencionalidad. El análisis puede ayudar a comprender estos movimientos, más aún si se comparan lenguas y culturas. Para ello, se investigaron 40 juegos de rol, grabados por italianos y brasileños, en los que se controlaron las variables: distancia social, edad, grado de imposición. Las transcripciones fueron etiquetadas, con el objetivo de verificar cómo se construye la secuencia interaccional y qué elementos la constituyen. Se observaron convergencias en las elecciones lingüísticas que determinan la construcción de la secuencia interaccional en ambas lenguas, pero también diferencias, principalmente en lo que se refiere al contacto establecido con el interlocutor, basado en valores culturales distintos: empatía para los brasileños, y respeto al territorio ajeno para los italianos.O pedido pode ser considerado um “ato social básico” utilizado no cotidiano em variados contextos. Para esse fim, foram investigados 40 role plays, gravados por italianos e brasileiros, nos quais foram controladas as variáveis: distância social, idade, grau de imposição. As transcrições foram anotadas, com o objetivo de verificar como se constrói a sequência interacional e quais são os elementos que a constituem.
